Hornets eliminated from playoff chase

April 21, 2004 -- MILLER GROVE -- Miller Grove became the third Hopkins County team eliminated from the playoffs in the same evening, as single runs in the third through sixth innings gave visiting Bland a 5-3 win Tuesday.

The Hornets (4-5 in District14-1A) took a brief lead in the second, as Billy Giles led off the inning with a single on his way to a 2-for-3 day. Michael Simpson got his lone hit of the game, when he launched a two-run homer for a 2-1 lead.

James Weaver took the loss, allowing four runs on six hits with two walks and five strikeouts in relief of starter Frank Weaver.

The Hornets got a single run in the seventh, but were unable to draw any closer. Frank Weaver was hit by a pitch, advanced two bases on passed balls and scored on James Weaver's single up the middle.

James Weaver finished 3-for-4, and Lee Roy Stracener also had two hits.
