Gideon learns from regional experience
From Staff Reports

April 21, 2004 -- DENTON -- Only a ninth-grader, Sulphur Springs' Dustin Gideon used his first experience at the regional golf tournament this week as a learning experience. He plans on applying those lessons starting next year.

Gideon shot an 83 on Tuesday, the second day of the Class 4A, Region II tournament at Robson Ranch/Wild Horse Golf Club, to finish with a 167. That put him above the median at 37th place out of 85 golfers.

"I feel OK about the way I shot," he said. "I finished around the middle of the pack, and I plan on being back next year and doing better.

"It was fun. The first tee off shot, you're as nervous as can be, playing with guys you know are going to shoot good. It was different than playing at district because the course is a little bit longer, and just knowing that it's for something bigger makes it different."

Gideon was playing as a medalist after finishing third at the District 11-4A tournament.

He said the strong wind made the lay-out on the 6,892-yard, par-72 course tougher than normal.

"It's a pretty tough course. The wind was blowing extremely hard both days," he explained. "I didn't make any putts, so that didn't help any, either."

Highland Park's two teams, the Blue and the Gold, finished first and second in the team standings with scores of 617 and 618, respectively. McKinney North Orange made a charge by shooting a 308 on Tuesday, but finished third at 625. McKinney North's Ross Jackson won medalist honors, though, with a 145 after tying the course record with a 68 on Tuesday.

The record was set the day before by Highland Park's Charlie Holland.
