Hopkins County to be well-represented at Class 1A regional meet

April 16, 2004 -- RICE -- North Hopkins, Cumby and Yantis will all send athletes to the boys Class 1A, Region III meet in Nacogdoches after they qualified at Wednesday's area track and field meet.

At Paul Pewitt, Saltillo had three boys qualify for regional by finishing in the top four in their events at the area meet held there. The Class 1A Region III meet is set for April 30-May 1 at Homer Bryce Stadium at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches.

North Hopkins' Jake Mannis, William Johnson and Adam Vitro all qualified in more than one event, while Yantis will send Brandon Knipple, and Cumby qualified Rusty Vaughan and John Bendall. Saltillo will send Corrie Byrd, Colin Garmon and Matt Sparks.

Overall, North Hopkins finished third in the team standings, compiling 65 points, while Cumby accounted for 26 points and Yantis had 6.

Mannis took second in both the 3,200-meter run and the 1,600, clocking times of 11:00.20 and 5:05.45, respectively, while Vitro was fourth in both distance races in 11:17.00 and 5:12.24. North Hopkins' Raul Delgado was third in the 1,600 in 5:06.94.

The top four finishers in each event qualify for the regional track meet, scheduled for April 30-May 1 at Stephen. F. Austin State University.

William Johnson qualified for regional in four events, placing second in the 400 in a time of 54.78, third in the 200 in 23.67, third in the 100 in 11.55, and third in the triple jump with a 41-2 effort. He was also sixth in the long jump at 19-4.

His younger brother, Cory, advances in the high jump with a 5-6 leap, which placed him third. He took sixth in the triple jump.

Brandon Knipple of Yantis will go to regional in the 400, as he placed fourth with a time of 56.79.

Cumby's Bendall was fourth in the shot put at 39-6 to advance. He also placed sixth in the discus at 87-6. Vaughan earned a regional trip by coming in fourth in the 300 hurdles in a time of 45.16.

The Cumby 1,600 relay team placed third in a time of 3:50.59 to advance. Their 400 relay team just missed a regional trip, coming in fifth in 46.84. Nick Dyer was sixth in the 110 hurdles with a time of 18.75.

Yantis' Tatsuya Sameshima just missed a regional trip as he placed fifth in the 200, and North Hopkins' J.P. Whittle was sixth in the 300 hurdles.

At Paul Pewitt, Garmon threw 120-0 in the discus to place second for Saltillo and advance. He will be joined there by teammates Byrd, who was fourth in the 400 in a time of 54.8, and by freshman Matt Sparks, who placed fourth in the 3,200 with a time of 5:21.
