Sept. 21, 2008 - A fund has been set up at Alliance Bank to help a Sulphur Springs man whose back was injured during a mishap with his deer stand.

Zach Loyd, a Como-Pickton High School graduate, had gone Sunday to the family farm where he and his father, Slick Loyd often enjoy hunting. While in his deer stand, it collapsed, causing him to fall to the ground and break his back. The young man, a truck driver in his 20s, was flown to East Texas Medical Center where he underwent surgery for the back injury. While doctors report he is expected to be OK, Loyd has a long road ahead of him in rehabilitation just to get back on his feet, his aunt Debbie Davis said.

Loyd has remained in good spirits since the accident despite the medical problem, which will likely go a long way in helping him through those long days in rehab.

"He has a wonderful sense of humor," Davis said. "He's got a good attitude and wants to get home to his family."

Thursday Loyd was still in the intensive care unit in Tyler, but could move to another room as early as this weekend, doctors told his family.

While he's recovering, Loyd will miss quite a bit of work. He does have medical insurance and likely will receive some disability insurance, but neither are expected to cover all the medical costs, much less other living expenses. Prior to the accident, both he and his wife of just over a year, Angie, were working "to make ends meet, especially now when things are so expensive," Davis notes.

In addition to their expenses, Zach and Angie Loyd have two children -- her son, Chasen, and daughter Taryne to care for as well.

The Zach Loyd medical fund was established Thursday at Alliance Bank.

"Anything would be greatly appreciated. Whatever they can give, anything they can do," Davis said of those who would donate to the fund.

Zach Loyd is a Como-Pickton High School graduate. He is the son of Slick and Susan Loyd and grandson of Mozzell Loyd.
