Top Guns: Probation officers take top honors at shooting contest

Oct. 6, 2008 - Hopkins County Community Supervision and Corrections Department placed first at the 8th Annual CSCD Shootout held Sept. 25, in Fredericksburg.

"We've been working hard. This competition is against excellent marksmen,"said Jerry Beare with the adult probation office.

The Shootout is a statewide competition for departments from across the state of Texas that carry (are armed), Bears explained.

"We've had a team shooting together for 7 years and have placed third numerous times," he said. "This is the first time we've come in first. We're all excited and everybody seems real proud for us."

Teams received a half day of training from the Department of Public Safety in all elements involved in a shooting, tactical course and "failed drill" speed paper targets.

Top ranked teams were Hopkins County, first; Kerr County, second; and Nacogdoches County, third.

Hopkins County CSCD team consisted of Joseph Flemens, Jim Tomlinson, Jimmie Emerson and Jerry Beare. Each member received leather crafted portfolios with the Texas seal.

Team member Joseph Flemens placed second individually for the Top Gun award.
