Christian-based talent show set for May 31 at Brashear Baptist
Fish fry preceding event will help raise money to send youths to church camp
From Staff Reports
May 25, 2008 - Talented performers from all over Hopkins County are invited to show off their skills at Brashear Baptist Church's Talent Search for Christ, which will be held immediately following an all-you-can-eat fish fry on Saturday, May 31.
"This is a fundraiser for so our youths can go to church camp," said David Burns Jr., the church's youth minister. "We wanted a way to entertain the adults who came to the fish fry, so we added the talent show."
Burns said the popularity of the Fox network's "American Idol" gave him the idea to make it a talent competition, open to everyone in the area.
"We're going to have judges who will award first, second and third places in each category," Burns said. "It's for the whole county, not just Brashear."
Burns said talents should be Christian-based, but they're not limited to vocal performances.
"If someone wants to read a poem or play the piano or guitar, that would be great," he said. "Performers need to either call me and let me know what they're going to do or register by 6 p.m. the day of the event."
The three age divisions for the talent show are elementary school and under; junior high and high school; and adults. There is no entry fee.
The fish fry begins at 5 p.m. in the church's fellowhip hall. Admission to the fish fry is $10 for adults, $5 for children from 6 to 12 and free for children under 5.
The talent show will begin "around 6:30 p.m.," Burns said, and will be held in the sanctuary. Admission to the talent show is free. Any donations received during the show will be used for Brashear Baptist's vacation bible school.
