Former Winnsboro police chief found dead outside home

March 27, 2008 - Gary Lile, former police chief for Winnsboro and most recently a Smith County Low Risk Jail administrator, was found dead Thursday morning.

Lile, who served for 12 years as Winnsboro police chief prior to being hired by Smith County, was one of three Smith County employees who were fired last week after an internal investigation regarding the use of inmate labor for personal use, among other irregularities.

The investigation was recently turned over to the Texas Rangers for further determination regarding criminal charges.

Smith County Sheriff J.B. Smith said Lile's death was tragic and difficult to handle.

"We are certainly shocked, because Lt. Lile was part of this family and he was loved and respected by the people he worked with," Smith said.

According to reports, Lile, 57, was found by his wife outside their home on U.S. Highway 69 north of Lindale.

Smith would not confirm how Lile died, but did confirm that the Texas Rangers were handling the matter.
