Scout Troop 937 keeps flags flying in neighborhoods

June 26, 2008 - Kiwanis Club handles putting out the flags along the main roads running through the city -- Church, Gilmer, Oak, Broadway, College, Houston, Main and Connally streets -- but what if you live in a neighborhood off the beaten path?

Boy Scout Troop 937 offers a similar flag sponsorship program where Scouts will put up and take down flags for a small fee in individual neighborhoods. For $30 per "season," the Scouts put out flags in neighborhoods on about a half-dozen holiday periods during the year, including Sept. 11.

Shawn Carpenter, who coordinates the Scout troops flag program, said they only work in neighborhoods where there are multiple residents who take part in the program, as it would be too costly and time-consuming to travel all across town to do individual homes.

The Scouts have already put out flags twice this contract period, for Memorial Day and Flag Day, but anyone who wants to get a neighborhood group together to order the Scouts' flag service can contact Carpenter at 903-488-2114.
