Cooper Lake basin road to close during inspection

June 10, 2008 - The road leading to the stilling basin below the dam at Cooper Lake will be closed next week during an inspection of the basin and outflow just north of the structure.

The routine inspection of the Cooper Dam Stilling Basin will be conducted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers from Monday, June 16, through Friday, June 20.

The road will be closed to the public for safety and security reasons during the inspection.

The examination will cover the stilling basin and outflow structure, which is a popular area for anglers when the water levels are up. The area is where water above the conservation pool level of the reservoir routinely flows into the Sulphur River.

"All work conducted during this inspection period will be completed with environmental safeguards in place to protect the Sulphur River basin and its fisheries," the Army Corps stated in a press released issued today.
