July 24, 2008 - Pacific Park may well be the coolest place in town come Monday night when the Masons of Columbia Lodge No. 81 do a little giving back to the community.
The lodge members will be giving away free ice cream and dessert, dishing out the cool treats from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. this coming Monday, July 28, at the H.W. Gray's Building in Pacific Park.
"We like to do something every year," said Chris Spivey, Worshipful Master of Columbia Lodge. " We just want to give something back to the community."
Last year, they teamed up with Heroines of Jericho Court 490 and Texas 211 (CANHelp) to provide school supplies to families that could use a little help. Spivey said they ended up giving away about 300 backpacks in addition to other back-to-school gear.
To top it off, they held a "Gearing Up for School" bash the week before the students returned to campus, providing hot dogs, drinks, door prizes, a bounce house and games. The school supplies were just for those who had registered, but the party was open to anyone in the community.
Columbia Lodge members will also be holding a lunchtime fundraiser Friday. "Barbecue in a Bag" offers a chopped beef sandwich, chips and a drink for $5 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the lodge hall on Gaines Street. Orders of 10 or more can be delivered. Call 903-348-5740 to place an order.
