July 20, 2008 - Sulphur Springs Independent School District trustees have designated three dates over the next 1 1/2 month to discuss and begin shaping the budget for the 2008-2009 school year.
The budget workshops will be held every 2 weeks on Mondays, beginning with a special board meeting July 28, and continuing during the regular August board meeting Aug. 11 and another special budget meeting Aug. 25 -- the first day of school.
The school board also recently approved recommendations from SSISD child nutrition program director Rickie Elliott that the Borden Inc. dairy division provide milk and juice products, Flowers Baking Company provide bread products, Orr Distribution provide ice cream products and DayBreak Fruit & Vegetable of Greenville provide produce in the coming year.
Borden was recommended over Oak Farms Dairy based on lower bids in eight of 10 categories of milk and juice products. Flowers Baking Company also underbid Sara Lee in seven of the 12 bread categories, with a total bid of $57,280, compared to Sara Lee's $61,343 price. Orr Distributing was recommended ahead of Blue Bell Creameries despite higher cost bids because Orr submitted firm bids for costs per dozen while Blue Bell's bid included an "escalator clause."
