SSHS teams take top spots in Spelling, Calculator, Ready Writing at UIL meets
Jan. 20, 2008 - Sulphur Springs High School's University Intersholastic League academic teams had strong outings in the first meets of the year, with the Ready Writing participants taking the first three spots in Mount Pleasant and the Calculator and Spelling teams winning in Princeton.
Most of the SSHS UIL team attended the Princeton meet last weekend, but Ready Writing wasn't offered there, so the SSHS writing group traveled to Mount Pleasant Friday night.
Zach Mahand took the top spot in Ready Writing, followed in second and third by Lyndsi Bible and Emily Mason, respectively.
At Princeton, the Calculator team of Marci Womack, Natanael Gonzalez, and Jeff Spears took first place, as did the Spelling team that included Zach Mahand, Lyndsi Bible and Sarah Fox
Womack placed second individually in Calculator, the highest-scoring senior, while Gonzalez and Spears tied for both third and as highest-scoring sophomores.
Mahand ffinished second individually in Spelling, followed by Bible in third.
The Accounting team of Ryan Clark, John Latham and Ayanna Smith finished second at Princeton, as did the Computer Science of Sam Pierce, Leah Davis and Connor McCorkle.
Clark finished in third individually in his discipline, and Latham took sixth. Pierce was seventh individually in Computer Science.
The Mathematics team brought home the third-place ribbon, won by the collective efforts of Regan Gilmore, Kaci Mohon and and Justin Brown.
Chelsey Tiegiser was the other student receiving individual recognition, taking fifth place in Science.
Other academic competitors for the Wildcats were Kasey Blezinger, Cole Cable, Jacob Cooper, Erin Echols, Abbey Eddins, Connie Gaddis, Nathan Grafton, Erin Gray, Andrew Gregory, Frankiesha Hawkins, Billy Hettich, Marvin Jimenez, Rosalynn Karstens, Autumn, Keiss, Sam Long, Morgan Lutz, Michelle Malone, Emily Mason, Katy Mason, Megan Michaelson, Anissa Miles, Taylor Moore, Melissa Ream, J.R. Rivera, Sarah Sapaugh, Jasmine Satchebell, Coby Steele, Mallorie Taylor, Mia Taylor, Cooper Welch, James Wheeler Jr. and Andrew Wooten.
