Burn ban lifted, but officials urge caution with outdoor fires

From Staff Reports

Feb. 10, 2008 - While the emergency burn ban recently instituted by Hopkins County Judge Cletis Millsap has expired, local residents are cautioned to be extremely careful with outdoor fires.

Dispatchers at Hopkins County Sheriff's Office have been inundated with calls about the burn ban, which was instituted by an emergency order from the judge on Feb. 1. The action prohibited the burning of any combustible material outside of any container or enclosure that will control the flames and sparks.

The ban on outdoor fires has expired, but officials say to be careful when conducting any outdoor burning.

They say to make sure someone is attending the fire at all times, and to keep a source of water nearby, such as a garden hose, in case the fire begins to spread.
