April 16, 2008 - Sulphur Springs High School late Tuesday afternoon received notification that the accounting team has been certified to compete at the State Academic University Interscholastic League Meet, which will be held May 2-3 at The University of Texas

"It's official! The accounting team is going to state!" exclaimed an exuberant Gina Wilder, SSHS UIL coordinator, just before 5 p.m. Tuesday.

The accounting team of Ryan Clark, Crysel Garcia, John Latham and Ayanna Smith earned second place honors at the Region 2-4A UIL Academic Meet this past weekend in Denton.

While first place teams at the regional meet automatically advance to the state contest, second place teams compete for the right to go as wild card entries. To be named the wild card team, the second place regional team has to outscore all other second place teams in the state, according to Wilder.

On Tuesday, school officials learned that Sulphur Springs High School's accounting team did indeed have the highest score of all second place teams in the state, earning the trip to The University of Texas at Austin.

They will join the school's top-ranked regional spelling and vocabulary team of Lyndsi Bible, Zach Mahand, Sarah Fox and Emily Mason at the state meet. Mahand will also be competing in ready writing after scoring a third-place finish at regionals.
