Roberts, Payne top graduates at Saltillo

May 23, 2007 - Chloe Elizabeth Roberts was named valedictorian and and Miles Eutah Davis Payne salutatorian of Saltillo High School's Senior Class of 2007. 

Roberts has earned many honors for her extracurricular activities in both academics and sports, and served in a number of leadership positions. She most recently was awarded a $250 Sulphur Springs/Hopkins County Crime Stoppers Association Scholarship.

She participated in University Interscholastic League competitions all four years of high school. Two of those years she was a regional qualifier. She advanced from district competition to the regional UIL meet in feature writing as a sophomore and in current events as a senior. She also was a member of the One Act Play crew her first three years of high school.

Roberts also was a member of the National Honor Society as a freshman, Spanish Club her sophomore and junior years, and served as vice president of FCA as a freshman. She also served as secretary of FCCLA as a junior and president the next year, and was also on the Relay for Life team.

As a freshman she was named class president and class favorite. She was also a class favorite her sophomore year, during which she also served as class treasurer. Her senior year she was again named class president.

The Saltillo valedictorian also earned accolades for her achievements in four sports. She participated in both basketball and track all four years of high school, softball three years beginning as a sophomore, and ran cross country as freshman and senior.

In basketball, Roberts was named Newcomer of the Year as a freshman, Offensive MVP as a sophomore, Co-MVP as a junior and MVP and All Region as a senior. She also received the Cap Herman Girls Tourney MVP award.

Roberts was named 2nd Team Pitcher in softball as a sophomore, Honorable Mention Pitcher as a junior and 1st Team All District Pitcher as a senior.

She was a regional qualifier in cross country as a freshman, and attained numerous milestones in track. As a freshman, she was a regional qualifier in the high jump and 400-meter run, and was the district high jump champ. Her sophomore year, Roberts high jumped her way to the district and area championships, and was both a regional and state qualifier in high jump. She was a district champ in high jump, an area qualifier in discus, and a regional qualifier in high jump and discus as a junior. During her senior year, Roberts was a regional qualifier in high jump.

Salutatorian Miles Payne also was accomplished in both academic and sports competitions, and earned a number of accolades for his efforts.

Payne most recently was awarded a $10,000 President's Achievement Scholarship Tier III and a $500 Saltillo/Mt. Vernon Young Farmers Scholarship.

He remained on the AB Honor Roll all four years of his high school career. He was listed in "Who's Who," and Payne's senior classmates voted him Most Athletic, Most Fun to Be with and Most Likely to Be Remembered. 

Payne participated in UIL One Act Play his sophomore, junior and senior years. As a senior he was named Honorable Mention All Star Cast. He also participated in mathematics and number sense in academic UIL contests all four years. As a freshman and senior, he was a regional qualifier in number sense. He was also a member of the ag mechanics team as a senior.

This year's salutatorian was a member of FCCLA for four years, of Spanish Club during his first three years of high school, and of FFA as a sophomore and senior.

Payne was a cross country regional qualifier and named 2nd Team All District in basketball and baseball. He made 1st Team All District in basketball his sophomore and junior years in basketball. As a junior and senior, he was named 2nd Team in Baseball and was an area qualifier in high jump. As a senior, he was MVP in basketball, a regional qualifier in the 100-meter dash and high jump, and was a regional qualifier in the 300-meter hurdle at the regional contest where he finished third.

Payne and Roberts will be honored along with SHS senior class members Tarryn Lynn Davis, Bethany Ann Densmore, Jose Erick Fiscal, Samuel James French, Joshua Lane Harris, Dustin Lee Kelly, Megan Gayle Knight, Steven Ray Knight, Jimmy Joe Methe, Meagan Michelle Porterfield, Rebekah Mirian Roberts and Travis Wayne Thompson during graduation ceremonies at 8 p.m. Friday in the school cafetorium, and with a baccelaureate service at 6 p.m. Sunday at Weaver Baptist Church.

Saltillo 8th graders will also be honored with a graduation ceremony at 7 p.m. Thursday in the school cafetorium.
