Head Start, Pre-K and kindergarten sign-ups start next week at SSISD and Como-Pickton

Parents of 3- and 4-year-olds can start digging up birth certificates if they plan on enrolling their children in school next year — Head Start, Pre-K and kindergarten registration in the Sulphur Springs and Como-Pickton school districts will be held next week.

Registration at SSISD begins Monday and continues through Friday. The early registration will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily in the Parent Center at the Early Childhood Learning Center located at 390 Hillcrest Drive.

The Head Start program accepts 3- and 4-year-olds, as well as children with disabilities as determined by need.

Pre-kindergarten accepts only 4-year-olds, while kindergarten is for 5-year-olds. Whatever the case, the child being registered must be 3, 4 or 5 years old on or before Sept. 1.

For Head Start and Pre-K applicants, the following items are necessary (and school officials stress NECESSARY) to register:

  • Birth certificate
  • Social Security card
  • Shot records
  • Proof of income, such as a paycheck stub, W-2 form, income tax return or a letter from an employer
  • TANF verification, if applicable
  • Medicaid card, if applicable
  • Proof of residency (driver’s license or current utility bill, for example)

For kindergarten applicants, each child must be 5 years old on or before Sept. 1, and the following items are necessary to register:

  • Birth certificate
  • Social Security card
  • Shot records
  • Proof of residency
  • Custody documents (if applicable)

Como-Pickton Elementary announced this week they will be hosting Head Start, prekindergarten and kindergarten registration for the 2007-2008 school year from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday-Friday, March 28-30, at the elementary school.

Head Start will be accepting applications for children who will be 3- or 4-year olds on or before Sept. 1, 2007, with preference given to 4-year-olds. To enroll in prekindergarten, students must be 4-years-old on or before Sept. 1, 2007.

When applying for enrollment in Como-Pickton's Head Start or Pre-K programs, parents should bring the child's birth certificate, Social Security card, up-to-date shot records, TANF verification if applicable, Medicaid card if applicable, proof of income and proof of residency. Proof of income may be a check stub, W-2 form, income tax form or letter from employer verifying income. To show proof of income, the child's parent or guardian can present their driver's license or a current bill. Head Start accepts children with mild, moderate or severe disabilities as determined by individual needs, school officials noted.

Students registering for kindergarten at Como-Pickton Elementary must bring their birth certificate, Social Security card, up-to-date shot records, proof of residency and custody documents when applicable.
