July 12, 2007 - Police and the Texas Rangers are still investigating the death of Lance Cpl. Gregory K. Bohannon, the U.S. Marine who was found dead Saturday following a crash on Church Street.
Officials have been working all week collecting information and are still waiting on results from the autopsy report, which as of late Thursday morning was not complete.
It could be a week or more before toxicology and other forensics tests are complete, according to Sulphur Springs Police Lt. Investigator Rusty Stillwagoner.
The investigator said officials won't be able to make any kind of determination regarding the case without that information. Anything else would just be speculation, he said.
Police and Texas Ranger Philip Kemp have been investigating the death since the crash was reported at about 1 a.m. Saturday.
At this point, they know for sure that Bohannon, 19, was involved in an accident. Officers who responded indicated his vehicle left the road and struck a tree. He was still inside and had to be "extracted." At that time, officers discovered a gunshot wound in Bohannon's chest, and investigators were called in. Bohannon, a 2006 graduate of Sulphur Springs High School, was pronounced dead at the scene, and an autopsy ordered.
Investigators are still taking witness statements, evaluating the scene and following up on any other information which has come to their attention in the case.
