Jan. 30, 2007 - An early evening blaze burned down a County Road 3562 house Monday, leaving only a small portion of the framework standing, according to fire reports.

An off-duty firefighter noticed the flames near his residence around 6:30 p.m. and called it in. He reported seeing flames and smoke, but said he found no one near the residence, nor did he know of anyone being there in some time.

Brinker, Dike, Hopkins County and Sulphur Bluff firefighters responded to the dispatch, noting the structure to be fully engulfed upon their arrival. They suspect the house had been burning for a while before anyone noticed the fire. One fireman said that flames were pouring out of every window, and blew out the front door when they were making entry into the structure.

In relatively short order, the firemen were able to knock down most of the blaze, then began "overhaul" work at the house. Some of the departments cleared at about 7:30 p.m., making them available to take other calls. Brinker's tanker, a Dike unit and Hopkins County firemen remained at the scene until around 9 p.m. to make sure that the blaze was extinguished, with no hot spots remaining.

The back half of the structure was destroyed, the roof caved in and only a  portion of the frame was not destroyed. Overall, the damage was estimated as a total loss. County firefighters said they were uncertain to whom the damaged house belonged.
