Jan. 10, 2007 - Yantis Independent School District's Superintendent Harold Cowley is leaving his post, officials in the school district's business office said Wednesday morning.

Cowley's reasons for leaving were unclear, as the superintendent was reported to be in meetings all morning and unavailable for comment, according to school officials.

The school board was slated to both evaluate the superintendent and review Cowley's contract during their regular business meeting on Monday night. Both agenda items were listed under executive session, meaning the deliberations were held behind closed doors.

Cowley was selected in May 2005 to act as interim superintendent after former Yantis Superintendent Jim Richarson announced during a board meeting that he would be resigning effective the last day of April 2005.

Yantis ISD trustees voted unanimously in July of 2005 to select Cowley as the lone finalist for the position of superintendent of the school district.

At the time of his hiring, Cowley brought 35 years experience as an educator to the job. Both he and his wife retired after five years at Rivercrest, he as superintendent of schools, and Jane as a teacher.

Harold Cowley began his career in education as a vocational agriculture teacher, later becoming an elementary principal, assistant superintendent of finance, and finally superintendent for Iowa Park schools, located about 10 miles west of Wichita Falls. They later moved back to Northeast Texas, where he served the remaining five years of his career as superintendent at Rivercrest ISD.

The Cowleys now live in Sulphur Springs, having moved back to Hopkins County, where Jane was raised. Harold is also a native of Northeast Texas, having grown up in Winfield in Titus County. They also have a son and daughter-in-law who are educators. James Cowley has served as elementary principal for Saltillo Independent School District for the past few years, and his wife is a counselor in Sulphur Springs.
