|Deadline set for Chamber banquet award nominations|

Jan. 7, 2007 - The annual Hopkins County Chamber of Commerce Membership Banquet is quickly approaching, and so are the deadlines to get in nominations for the many awards to be presented during the event.
The 81st Chamber banquet will be held Thursday, Feb. 8, at the Hopkins County Regional Civic Center arena.
In place of a featured speaker, entertainment will be provided this year by the Morning Chapel Missionary Baptist Church Choir and the Latin dancers from Como-Pickton school.
�Tickets for the banquet are $20 and can be purchased by calling the Chamber at 903-885-6515.� As in years past, entire tables may be purchased by businesses or individuals for their employees or families. The deadline to purchase the same tables they had at last year's banquet is Friday, Jan. 26. After that time, those tables not claimed will be made available to others.
Jan. 26 is also the deadline for nominations for the many awards to be given out at the banquet.
The Citizen of the Year award, received last year by Dawn Sheffield, is the highlight of the annual banquet, recognizing and rewarding people involved in community activities.
"It's an award for the time expended, for getting out and working and giving of yourself and your time," said Bill Elliott, president and chief executive officer of the Chamber.
The award, sponsored each year by Echo Publishing Company, is decided by an anonymous committee. Anyone wishing to place a name in nomination should include a written description of the accomplishments of the nominee, which can be either from the past year or an accumulation of accomplishments over a period of years.
Nominations for Citizen of the Year can be sent to Echo Publishing Co., P.O. Box 598, Sulphur Springs, TX 75483.
In addition to Citizen of the Year, several other awards will be given at the annual dinner.
Beta Sigma Phi is currently accepting nominations for Hopkins County’s Lady of the Year award, given last year to Bonnie Gilmer.
Nominees for Lady of the Year must first be a Hopkins County resident. Also, selection will be made based on the nominee’s community and civic involvement through volunteer work or church activities.
A letter outlining a nominee’s qualifications for the award can be sent to Lady of the Year, 318 North Como St., Sulphur Springs, TX 75482.
The Pilot Club of Sulphur Springs is again sponsoring the Caregiver of the Year Award, presented in 2006 to Pat Higginbotham. Nominees are dedicated individual who provide voluntary caregiver service for individuals with no monetary compensation for their efforts. Those providing care for people with brain-related disorders or diseases such as Alzheimer's, dementia, Parkinson's and Huntington's will be given special consideration.
Recommendations may be mailed to Pilot Club, 345 Highland Drive, Sulphur Springs, TX 75483. Nominations must include a personal narrative describing the type of care the nominee provides, how long the care has been given, who the care is provided to, how they meet the criteria, and why they are deserving to be considered for the award.
Bryant Fisher and his family received the Agriculturalist of the Year Award in 2006, and honor sponsored annually by Hopkins County Professional Ag Workers Association and given to an individual or family that has left a memorable mark on the area's agriculture industry. Nominations can be sent to the Ag Workers Association, P.O. Box 283, Sulphur Springs, TX 75483.
The Chamber of Commerce is also taking nominations for Small Business of the Year and Industry of the Year awards. Nominations should be made for businesses which exhibit outstanding community involvement in civic, church, educational, benevolent, humanitarian or other types if community service. The Hopkins County Adult Leadership Class of 1994 gives out the Community Pride Awards, presented to organizations who work to better the community.
Friday is the cutoff to get in applications to Hopkins County Chamber of Commerce Workforce Development Committee nominating businesses for Small Business of the Year and Large Business of the Year awards.
Large businesses must have 51 or more employees and small businesses 50 or less employees. Nominations should be made for businesses which exhibit outstanding community involvement in civic, church, educational, benevolent, humanitarian or other types if community service.
Nomination forms for small and large business of the year are available at the Chamber of Commerce office, 1200 Houston St., and may be returned to the chamber by fax, (903) 885-6515; or mailed to the Chamber at P.O. Box 357, Sulphur Springs, TX 75483-0347. All nominations must be in by Jan. 13 to be considered for the application to be considered.
Nominations for citizen of the year may be sent to Echo Publishing Co., P.O. Box 598, Sulphur Springs, TX 75683-0598.
The deadline for the Third Annual Caregiver of the Year Award will be accepted by the Pilot Club of Sulphur Springs through Friday, Jan. 27.
To qualify as a nominee, a person should perform voluntary caregiver service for one or more individuals for no compensation. Nominees providing care to an individual with brain-related disorders, including Alzheimer’s, Dementia, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s diseases and and others, will be given special consideration for the award. Other qualifications require the nominee be a resident of Hopkins County or provide care to one or more Hopkins County residents.
Restrictions prevent nominees from being a member of Pilot Club or Hopkins County Chamber of Commerce during the year in which they are nominated.
A personal narrative of the caregiver must be submitted with the nomination. Information that should be included is the type care provided, how long the nominee has been a caregiver, for whom they provide care, how the nominee meets the criteria for the award and why the person submitting the nomination feels the nominee is deserving of the award.
Nominations for Caregiver of the Year should be mailed to Pilot Club, P.O. Box 133, Sulphur Springs, TX 75483. They should be received no later than Jan. 27.
