Feb. 13, 2007 - Another candidate has signed up for the upcoming City Council race, the third person to file for one of two seats up for election this year.
Pat Murray, who ran unsuccessfully for a seat on the council in 2006, filed to run for the Place 5 seat currently held by Larry Powers.
Gary Spraggins, owner of Dairyland Automation, filed to run for the Place 5 seat on Monday morning. Spraggins was appointed to the Planning and Zoning Commission in 2002 and 2005. He is also involved with Hopkins County Professional Ag Worker's Association and North East Texas Choral Society, and has served as president of both organizations in the past.
Murray lost to Oscar Aguilar in last year's run for the Place 3 City Council seat. Murray, a retired building contractor and real estate broker, also spent 22 years in the military in search and rescue. He is also a member of AARP and the Civil Air Patrol.
Place 4 Councilman Freddie Taylor also filed Monday morning for a second term on the council. Taylor, manager of the VF Outlet store, was selected to serve as mayor by his fellow council members last year. He is currently unopposed in his re-election bid.
Filing continues until March 12 for the Place 4 and Place 5 City Council seats.
