Apr. 23, 2007 - Local residents will have an opportunity Tuesday to meet and learn more about candidates running for seats on Sulphur Springs City Council and Sulphur Springs Independent School District in the upcoming election.
Hopkins County Democratic Women will be sponsoring their annual candidate forum beginning at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 24, in the board room of Sulphur Springs ISD Administration Building, 631 Connally St. The forum, although hosted by the Democratic Women, is a nonpartisan event being conducted as a means for local voters to become better acquainted with Sulphur Springs candidates.
The event starts with a meet and greet session at 6:30 p.m., and will be followed at approximately 6:45 p.m. by the candidate forum. Each candidate has been offered the opportunity to give a brief statement about their background and why they are running, and will then answer questions from the audience.
In the city council race, incumbent Freddie Taylor, who is currently serving as mayor is challenged by Ronald J. Blount for Place 4. Pat Murray and Gary Spraggins are both seeking election to the Place 5 seat. Larry Powers, who currently holds the Place 5 seat, opted not to file for reelection.
In the school board election, incumbents Foy Williams and Carolyn Malone Thomas are challenged by Clay Johnson and Mike Nordin.
