Weekend getaway added to Boys & Girls Club auction
From Staff Reports
Apr. 15, 2007 - A weekend for 12 on Lake Cypress, complete with a lake house, pontoon boat and catered dinner, has been added to the items to be auctioned Saturday, April 21, to benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Hopkins County.
The auction will take place during the club's annual "Let's Go to the Hop" fundraiser gala, a Fifties themed event at the Hopkins County Regional Civic Center.
Tickets are $35 and can be obtained by calling Maleta Reynolds at 903-885-5314, or writing to her at 1509 Brandy Circle, Sulphur Springs, TX 75482.
Gala Chairman Pennye West said the items to be auctioned cover a broad range of prices.
"Not everyone will be bidding for the big-ticket things like the lake weekend, so we'll have plenty of really great things for lower prices," she said.
West mentioned a baby quilt, a family fun basket that has all the games and snacks for a family night at home, a teen-age girl basket with hair products, a flatiron and "lots of nice smelly stuff," and a dine-around-town package that includes meals at an array of restaurants.
Boys and Girls Club President Charles Dawnson said the club is trying to raise a quarter of a million dollars for operating expenses. He noted that a major grant that compensates the teachers working in the program provides a small amount for those salaries each year, which means the amount the club has to generate on its own keeps rising.
The community is responding to the need, Dawson said. More than 40 donations of $1,000 or more — including three of $5,000 and up — have been received or pledged, he said.
"We pay nothing to professional fund-raisers," Dawson said. "When you give to the Boys and Girls Club, your gift goes to the club, and that's the way we intend to keep it."
