Yantis Independent School District board will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday for a public forum concerning school facilities needs and proposed solutions to space needs.
School officials have evaluated the situation, and based on that assessment are recommending upgrades and additions to accommodate increased enrollment and address needed repairs and space limitation.
Administrators are considering three proposals: to renovate the old gymnasium; to add a few new classrooms which could house sixth, seventh and eighth grade students in one section; and construction of a new library. Administrative office needs may also be discussed.
"We hope to get community input to tell us what all [they've] got in mind from parents of little kids to elderly taxpayers," YISD Superintendent Harold Cowley said regarding the town hall meeting. "This will be a relaxed gathering to hear information for facilities. We hope to have a good turnout from all parts of the community."
Cowley said the classroom additions would solve space issues and would create a middle school area for sixth through eighth graders who are currently housed alongside ninth through 12th graders at the high school facility.
"We may be able to do these things, and we may not be able to do them," Cowley said. "We just want to know how the community feels about it, their priorities and so forth."
Cowley encourages all community members, taxpayers and parents who are able to attend to have their concerns, opinions and ideas heard, as well as to ask any questions regarding the issue.
The town hall meeting begins at 7 p.m. Thursday in Yantis ISD cafeteria and is open to the public.
