Not just for kids: Animals get into the act with adoption event, ‘Pet Trunk or Treat’

Oct. 27, 2006 - Halloween's not just for kids anymore, or any other human beings,, for that matter — pets are getting in on the fun, too.

This year, a local animal rescue group will be holding two events Saturday targeted at pets and their owners, as well as potential pet partners.

Hearts of Life Animal Rescue & Adoption begins the day of fun at 9 a.m. tomorrow at Broadway Vet Hospital, located at 2019 South Broadway St., with a Halloween Adoption. Hearts of Life will have several of the cats and dogs they have rescued available for adoption to a loving home through 1 p.m. Saturday.

Potential pet owners will be asked to pay a $65 fee to help offset the cost of spaying/neutering the cat or dog, as well as the extensive health testing performed by veterinarians. The cost is well worth the amount spent to make sure the pet is in good health by seeing that it is current on all shots and has been tested for illnesses and parasites where applicable, according to Karen Lopez, who is helping coordinate the events.

There's more later in the day. Those with pets of any kind can bring the critters in their best glad rags and Halloween costumes to Broadway Vet Clinic between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday for fun and games at a "Pet Trunk or Treat." Pet owners are encouraged to bring their pets in costume. For example, twine or yarn atop a dog sporting a "bun" on the side for a canine pretending to be a "hot dog," and a doggie bag.

And that old saying that pets and owners begin to favor each other after awhile? Folks can bring their animal for a chance at a prize for best look-a-likes. Prizes will also be awarded to the pet with the scariest costume and the cutest costume, as well as other games and contests.
