SSHS band named Grand Champions at Parkway contest

Oct. 23, 2006 - The Sulphur Springs High School Band's final tune-up before the regional UIL contest paid off handsomely.

The band earned all first division ratings and was named Grand Champion Saturday at the Parkway Marching Contest in Bossier City, La.

The band was also named Best in Class and earned Best in Class Color Guard and Best in Class Percussion honors.

All sections of the band received first division ratings, including drum major Whitney McDaniel, the percussion, the color guard and the band.

The Sulphur Springs group performed twice Saturday due to the preliminary and finals format of the contest. After the preliminaries, Sulphur Springs sat in first place, finishing a full three points ahead of the second place band.

The local group was the last to perform in the finals and raised their score to a 91, finishing more than six points ahead of the next band. 

The contest was the final preparation before the band attends the Region IV University Interscholastic League Contest in Mount Pleasant on Wednesday. Performance time for the SSHS band is 2 p.m.
