Oct. 2, 2006 - Sulphur Springs Downtown Business Alliance has a day full of cars and music planned for Saturday, Oct. 14, with their first Heritage Square Rod Run on the courthouse square.
The day will start out with registration for the car show beginning at 8 a.m. and conclude with a music concert featuring some of the best up and coming names in the music industry including LanTana.
Rita Edwards, president of Downtown Business Alliance, said a large number of classic and custom cars and hot rods are expected to fill the square.
Weve been giving out fliers at all the car shows we go to, Edwards said. Plus, I have mailed out over a hundred to people we know that have cars so we are hoping for a really good turnout.
We will have Rhonda Youngs fathers truck, she said. She had it restored and street-rodded and it won Top Ten Truck at Good Guys show last year, one of the biggest events of the year. There will be several quality cars here that win awards at every show they go to.
Edwards said there will also be “everyday” cars in the show including their 39 Chevy coupe she and husband Eugene like to drive and take to car shows.
Awards will also be given to exhibitors in the car show based on spectator reaction.
All of the spectators that come to just look and admire all of the cars can pick up a ballot at the registration booth and they can vote on their favorite vehicle, she said. We will be giving a Peoples Choice Award.
For the first 50 entries in the car show, there will be dash plaques handed out and all pre-registered entries will receive an event t-shirt.
Other awards to be presented will include Best of Show, Best Paint, Best Engine, Best Interior, Best Street Rod, Best Original, Best Unfinished and the car judged best by the other participants in the car show.
As the car show winds down around 4 p.m. Saturday, a lot of musical entertainment is planned that will include some of the up and coming top names in the music industry.
We are expecting the Michael Kline Band, Pat Waters, Sy Blakeman and our feature group is LanTana, one of the members of that group is our own Carol Ann Kelty and their record just moved to number 13 on the charts, Edwards said.
The concert is expected to continue until about 7 p.m.
The Heritage Square Rod Run and free concert is sponsored by the Downtown Business Alliance to focus attention on the city’s historic downtown area and the movement to renovate the area.
