|Hey! It’s time to get those hay show entries in|
|LARRY SPRADLIN | Hopkins County Extension Agent/Agriculture|
Oct. 1, 2006 - Today, I just wanted to remind everyone that time is growing short for entries for the Hopkins County Hay Show, sponsored every year by the Hopkins County Professional Ag Workers Association. We have already received some entries but would sure like to have some more.
Again, all we need is a small sample of hay, enough for a visual inspection along with an analysis. Your sample of hay will need to be brought by the Hopkins County Extension Office at 228 Hinnant St. on or before Tuesday, Oct. 10 at 5 p.m.
There is no charge for entering the show and there is prize money for the top bales. Please contact me at 903-885-3443 if you have any questions concerning the hay show.
The money that is raised from the sale of the champion bales will go into the Hopkins County Professional Ag Workers educational fund to be used on some lucky students of Hopkins County.
Last year, there were 17 entries, with the top 10 bales being sold at auction by auctioneer. The top three bales received cash prizes of $100 for 1st place, $50 for second place and $25 for third place.
R.L. Wright submitted the Grand Champion bale with a second cutting of Coastal testing at 18.5 percent protein. Wright was also the runner-up. He submitted the Reserve Champion bale, which was a second cutting of Tifton 85 testing at 15.1 percent protein. Jim Russell, with Tifton 85 testing at 13.3 percent protein, submitted the third place bale.
