Nov. 20, 2006 - You know that nice, comfy jacket hanging up in the closet that’s in perfectly good shape, but for whatever reason you don’t wear it anymore? Somebody out there could really use it.
For some local residents, warm blankets and coats are a luxury they cannot afford, and that’s the impetus behind Hopkins County Community Action Network's annual winter coat and blanket drive.
In the past, the drive has provided enough warm gear to outfit hundreds of individuals and families. The annual drive is being conducted throughout the month of November, just in time for the cool December winds and weather.
Anyone with lightly used jackets and blankets still in good repair can bring the laundered or dry cleaned ready-to-wear coats and blankets to the CANHelp office, located at 525 Church St.
The drive began Monday, Nov. 13, and will continue through Dec. 15.
Donations may be made at the CANHelp office Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m., and on Fridays from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., with the exception of Thursday and Friday, Nov. 23-24, when the office will be closed Thanksgiving Day and the day after to allow time for staff to share the holiday with family and friends.
If those times are inconvenient for coat and blanket drop-offs, donors may call 903-885-9797, and arrangements can be made for staff to be available at other times to receive donations.
Anyone needing coats this year may stop at the CANHelp office during the hours listed above. Those seeking warm coverings should note that each person requesting a coat must be present to be fitted and receive a coat.
