Christina Bean was awarded the state championship Conference A Olympian, after taking first place individually in the spelling and vocabulary contest with a score of 98 on the state test.
Burchfield took sixth at the state contest, placing her among the top 99 percentile of top spellers in the state. Kenney earned 74 points, placing her among the top 5 percent of freshmen spellers in Texas.

That means YHS has had to earn the district and regional championship for the past four years in order to qualify for state
The two pillars of that team all four years have been Bean and Burchfield, who have been active participants and contributors to the team.
Another student who advanced to the state UIL meet was Bailey Gilbreath, who took top honors in news writing at the regional meet.
