TXU building overpass near Thermo to expand mining operationsBy

June 20, 2006 -- Construction began Monday on a new overpass on FM 1870 near Thermo to allow TXU to expand operations at the Thermo mine to new areas on the east side of the farm-to-market highway.

The highway work is not a project of Texas Department of Transportation, according to Sulphur Springs Area Engineer Ernest Teague, who said the work will be done by TXU and contractors hired by the company.

The overpass will be south of Thermo and on an east-west line with  TXU's mining operations.

Teague and TXU spokesman Tom Kleckner said the "offset bridge-overpass," when complete, will detour traffic off of FM 1870 for just more than a half-mile.

"It allows us access to the east side of property to continue mining," Kleckner said.

Construction is expected to be complete in February 2007. The project will have no effect on traffic on FM 1870 because
