June 2, 2006 - Sulphur Springs High School choir students really cleaned up at this year’s State University Interscholastic League Solo/Ensemble contest. All 15 students participating in the meet came home with at least one medal for their performances. Overall, one ensemble and seven students captured gold medals for their “superior vocal performances,” while three others received silver medals for “excellent vocal talent.”

The eight-member Madrigal Singers came away from last weekend’s state contest in Austin with their first "1" at state and brought back gold medals. The group composed of Laura McCoy, Eboni Rape, Jessica Arledge, Starla Keller, Tearance Ford, Weston Teer, Christian Person and James Wheeler was determined to have put on a top caliber performance, with their superior vocal rendition of the English madrigal, " Fair Phyllis.” One judge was especially complimentary of the Madrigal Singers’ “energy and buoyancy,” according to SSHS Choral Music Director Jerry Bradley.

Ford and Wheeler were also among the top rank soloists, awarded first division gold medals for their individual vocal performances. Brandon Edwards, Jessica Lewis, Randi Ruthart, Jessica Sparks and Brandon Woolley were the other soloists awarded gold for their superior performances.

Second division silver medals were awarded to Nellie Aguilar, Melissa Cutrell and Christian Person for their “excellent” rated solo performances.

Soloists were assisted and accompanied by private vocal instructor, Sandra Klein, with Jerry Bradley directing all choral music programs.
