June 2, 2006 - The annual parade is one of the highlights of the first weekend of the Hopkins County Dairy Festival, a tradition officially kicking off the yearly salute to the dairy industry.
However, in order for the parade to be a success entries are needed. Mike Blount, parade chairman, said that so far this year entries are few and far between. But, even though the parade is still more than a week away, there is still time to get signed up, he said.
The parade will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 10, at Buford City Park. Acting as parade marshals for this year's event will be Jerry Don and Peggy Gibby. The parade will follow the traditional route down Connally Street turning onto Gilmer Street and continuing past Heritage Square.
Among the entries confirmed for folks to enjoy seeing in this year's parade will be 2005 Dairy Festival Queen Alina Tatum atop her gold and white float. Floats boast contestant's in this year's Dairy Festival Pageant and mini floats carrying this year's "Little Kids of Dairy Festival."
But that's not even a good start. More entries such as vehicles to be exhibited in the 2nd Annual Corvette Club Rally which follows on the Chamber grounds, as well as commercial, private, civic and church organizations' entries are needed to make the parade a success.
And don't be surprised if this year's floats appear a bit cheesier than usual, as parade organizers are asking that entries depict this year's theme "Just Say Cheese."
Anyone interested in being in the parade, which begins at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 10, should call Mike Blount at 903-885-7729 to register. However, those wanting in more information on the "little kids" should contact Patricia Chase at 903-348-2117.
