July 24, 2006 - A 43-year-old Cumby man was killed Saturday as a result of a motorcycle crash on FM 2653 in Miller Grove. Michael Runyan Whillock taught science at Miller Grove school last year.

Whillock was traveling on FM 2653 just east of FM 275 in the Miller Grove community around 8:45 p.m. Saturday on a 2001 Yamaha motorcycle. The bike left the roadway, causing Whillock to lose control of the motorcycle, throwing him off the bike. Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Trent Price said, in his accident report, Whillock was not wearing a helmet and received massive head injuries.

Whillock was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:50 p.m. by Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace Yvonne King at the crash scene.

Price was assisted in his investigation by Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. Tony McCollum, Cpl. Cody Sanders, troopers Ray Ragan and Joseph Hogue, Cumby police and Hopkins County sheriff's deputies.

Funeral services for 43-year-old Miller Grove science teacher Michael R. Whillock of Cumby are slated for 10 a.m. Friday, July 28, at West Oaks Funeral Chapel. Visitation will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 27.

Whillock had taught science to seventh through 11th grade students at Miller Grove Independent School District for 11 years, and according to school officials "was very well loved" by school personnel and students alike.
