July 21, 2006 -- Sulphur Springs/Hopkins County Special Crimes Unit, along with Hopkins County sheriff’s officers, became involved Thursday in first a vehicle chase, then a foot pursuit in Cumby, which ended in a fight.

Don Michael White, 39, of Sulphur Springs remained in the county jail at noon Friday awaiting arraignment on felony charges of unlawful carrying of a weapon by a felon and evading arrest with a vehicle, and on a warrant for violating the terms of his parole.

SCU investigators, acting on information received from a "reliable source" that White was violating his parole by having a weapon, set up surveillance on the man. As he pulled onto County Road 4730 east to turn onto FM 275 south in Cumby at 5 p.m. Thursday, HCSO Deputy Ron England attempted a traffic stop.

Instead of pulling over, White backed the blue Chevrolet pickup back down CR 4730 at a high rate of speed, according to SCU Investigator Tony Crouse, with the officer in pursuit.

The vehicle slowed as it neared a ditch, and the man jumped from the moving Chevrolet truck. The truck continued rolling into the ditch before striking a pipe fence. Reports state White threw down a 9 mm pistol, which landed under the truck, then ran from the scene.

SCU and other officers giving chase on foot. When they caught up to White, authorities reported, he became combative, fighting with four officers before he was finally restrained. One officer sustained scratches, while an investigator sustained a rib injury during the fight and "take down."

White was arrested by HCSO Deputy England, and SCU Sgt. Harold McClure, Lt. Ron Plaxco and Sgt. Tony Crouse for the third-degree felony offense of unlawful carrying of a weapon by a felon and for felony evading arrest in a vehicle. HCSO Investigators Charles Humphries and Lewis Tatum also assisted.

Early Friday morning the SCU investigators secured a warrant for violating his parole, adding a third offense to the list of charges. White had yet to be arraigned for at noon Friday.

SCU investigators will be speaking with federal officers Monday to determine whether he case will be handed up to federal officials or prosecuted locally by the district attorney, Crouse said Friday.
