Dinner, auction March 25 will aid Boys and Girls Club
From Staff Reports

Feb. 27, 3006 - Youngsters in the Boys and Girls Club of Sulphur Springs, already packing a lot into the hours they spend at the club each week, are in the countdown for their dinner and auction to be held Saturday, March 25, at Hopkins County Regional Civic Center.

Members of the club play a major role in planning and putting on the entertainment for the club’s big night, which this year is built around a carnival theme. Tickets, $25 each, can be ordered from Maleta Reynolds, 903-885-5314.

As at last year’s event, club members will be seated at all tables so the adults attending can talk with them.

This year, some of them will be able to tell about their experiences in periodically picking up trash along a two-mile stretch of State Highway 11. Or they can focus on what goes on at the club five afternoons a week, as more than a hundred children are carefully checked in by name and, following snack time, buckle down to do homework under the eye of professional teachers.

Once homework is out of the way, club members split up and pursue numerous activities, including dance, computers, art and games. Come spring, they will be working in their garden. Every activity is keyed to the club’s motto, “The Positive Place for Kids.”

While many boys and girls in the club pay an annual $10 membership fee, these dues alone cannot meet the club’s expenses. It falls to the annual fundraising dinner — and especially — to pick up the slack.

The live and silent auctions will offer a wide variety of travel opportunities, a puppy or two, packages for those that like to be pampered, catered dinners, hunting parties and many other items designed to bring money into the club’s coffers.
