Feb. 15, 2006 -- Lots of thorough preparation and planning are vital for any successful event, and the annual Hopkins County Dairy Festival is no exception. With so many activities to coordinate, event organizers spend nearly an entire year putting together the annual week-long tribute to the local dairy industry.
With 2006 ticking away, members of the Dairy Fest Board of Directors are working hard to ensure the success of the fair.
The 2006 Hopkins County Dairy Festival kicks off Friday, June 9, with the hot Air Balloon Rally and Glow at 7:30 p.m. at Sulphur Springs High School and continues through June 17, with the World Famous Texas State Championship Ice Cream Freeze-Off on June 10, a dairy food contest and dairy show, and culminates with the Dairy Festival Queen's coronation pageant at 7 p.m. in the Civic Center.
In between those times will be the annual parade featuring queen contestants' floats, kids' mini floats, a 5K run, milking contest, more hot air balloon activity, a 42 tournament, a four-day carnival and numerous other events.
The board of directors is currently accepting applications for pageant contestants. Candidates can be an 11th grade student at any Hopkins County school. Any girl interested in becoming a contestant can pick up a packet or obtain more information from her high school counselor or may call Cindy Lancaster at 903-439-5336, Lynda Hager at 903-885-3193, Mary Crump at 903-243-1200, or Patricia Chase at 903-885-9436.
The pageant will begin at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 17, at Hopkins County Regional Civic Center. The first contestant meeting, an information sharing session for interested candidates and their parents, will be held at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 27, at Guaranty Bond Bank. Those planning to attend should inform board members so that an invitation may be addressed to them and a spot secured.
Scholarships ranging from $250 to $1,000 will be awarded to the queen and runners-up.
