|Two chances to donate gift of life|
|From Staff Reports|
Dec. 18, 2006 - Two blood drives are being held in Sulphur Springs Wednesday to help bolster Stewart Regional Blood Center’s bank, which is critically low on supplies of six of the eight blood types.
To provide for the blood needs of East Texas, its essential to have people who donate on a regular basis, said Lorie Schenck, Director of Corporate Communications at Stewart Regional Blood Center. Every day we fill orders for every blood type, and it takes us collecting at least 150 units a day for there to be enough blood for all the patients in East Texas who depend on receiving it.
The blood bank currently has only a good supply, or two to three days worth, of types A positive and A negative blood types. In critical need are both negative and positive types of O, B and AB blood. The bank has less than is generally needed to meet one day’s blood needs in East Texas, SRBC representatives said Friday.
To help bolster those supplies to more healthy levels, 18 blood drives are slated during the next two weeks all across SRBC’s East Texas service region. Hopkins County residents will have two opportunities Wednesday, Dec. 20, to give blood. The first blood drive begins at 7 a.m. and continues through 11 a.m. in the back parking lot at Texas Department of Transportation, located at 1100 Hillcrest Drive. The second will be from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. in front of the wound care facility at Hopkins County Memorial Hospital.
Potential donors must be healthy, at least 17 years old, and weigh at least 110 pounds. Photo identification is required. Also, blood bank officials recommend that donors drink lots of water and eat a nourishing meal before donating. Whole blood donations can be made every 56 days.
Anyone who wants to donate but will be unable to do so at either of the drives Wednesday may do so at any other drive in the East Texas area or from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday and Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday, or from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Tyler donor center, located at 815 South Baxter Ave. in Tyler.
As an added incentive to get people to the Tyler donor center, those who have given blood there anytime Dec. 1-20 is eligible to win a $50 Brookshire’s gift certificate. The winner will be drawn Dec. 22. Those donating Dec. 15-30 will received double ClubRed points. For more information about that program go online to: www.clubredstore.org.
