Higher Education Center slates continuing education classes for September

Aug. 16, 2006 -- A variety of continuing education classes will be offered during the month of September at the Sulphur Springs Higher Education Center, according to SSHEC Director Linda Bennett.

Food Protection Management Certification

A Food Protection Management Certification class will be held from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sept. 25, 26 and 27. This training and certification is for people in charge of establishments that prepare and serve food to the public. It is structured around the rules on food service sanitation set by the Texas Department of Health and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Business

A Professional Telephone Skills class will be held from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Sept. 8. Participants will learn how to handle every caller with tact, confidence, and professionalism while turning difficult callers into satisfied customers.

Child Care Development

A Child Development Associate class provides experiences and skills needed to become a Child Development Associate. It is based on the 8-module curriculum developed by the Council for Early Childhood Professional Recognition. The class will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. each Monday, Sept. 18 through May 14, at the Early Childhood Learning Center.

Welding

A Beginning Arc Welding class will meet from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. each Tuesday, Sept. 19 through Nov. 21. This class covers the theory and introduction to the shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) processes. Students will need to furnish their own helmet, glasses and gloves.

The Intermediate Arc Welding class will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. each Monday, Sept. 18 through Nov. 27. This class covers manipulative skills in welding techniques, applications and theory. Everyone will complete a project in this class. Students will need to furnish their own helmet, glasses and gloves.

Truck Driver Training

First Seat provides truck driver training at their Sulphur Springs location, with the next class beginning Sept. 18. This 200-hour course provides the skills and knowledge necessary to take the Commercial Drivers License (CDL) exams. Successful completion of the class will provide DOT certification. All applicants must have a physical, drug screen and background screen prior to the first day of class.Call 903-885-9800 for more information.

Computing for Senior Adults (55+)

Understanding Personal Computers is designed for the beginner and uses a hands-on approach that prepares participants to take other computer courses. Basic touch-typing skills would be helpful. This class meets from 9 a.m. to 12 noon each Friday, Sept. 22 through Oct. 6.

Spanish

Conversational Spanish I will be held from 6 p.m. to 9:15 p.m. each Wednesday, Sept. 13 through Oct. 11. This class gives a practical and functional use of Spanish in a very short period of time. The class uses a teaching method which breaks the language down to basic components to help students form sentences, and say what they want, when they want.
