Aug. 30, 2006 -- Sulphur Springs firefighters are extending their appreciation in advance for local motorists' patience for slowing traffic at three of the major intersections of town, as well as offer their thanks for your support during this weekend's Fill the Boot drive.

The firefighters will be standing, boots in hand, ready to collect any monetary donation, from pennies to dollars, to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association, a nonprofit organization whose funding comes solely from individual and corporate foundations.

Last year, donations to the Sulphur Springs Fire Department raised $13,080 of the $75,000 collected in East Texas for patients with neuromuscular diseases. Over the last 10 years, SSFD has donated more than $76,000 to MDA on behalf of Hopkins County.

To donate, people should look for firefighters Thursday, Friday and Saturday, from about 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and toss contributions in their boots as they travel through the red lights at the intersection of Linda Drive and Gilmer Street, and around the courthouse square at the corners of Oak Avenue and College Street, Jefferson and Church Streets, and possibly Jefferson Street at Oak Avenue.

If you miss them on the street corners, donations may be made at Central Fire Station, located on Church Street, or by calling 903-885-7547 during the same time period.
