|SSISD trustees to consider setting tax rate|

August 14, 2006 - Architect Richard Crump is expected to update school officials tonight on the progress of and upcoming deadlines for construction projects currently underway at Sulphur Springs High School and Early Childhood Learning Center. Doug Smith, engineer, is also slated to report on structural repairs at SSHS during the regular trustees meeting of Sulphur Springs Independent School District tonight.
Trustees will also be advised of upcoming parent orientation activities for students in grades 1 through 12 over the next few weeks, renew some contracts as is routine each year, and consider a proposed tax rate as well as set a date for a public hearing for discussion on the tax rate.
ECLC and Beginnings Learning Center held their orientation last Thursday, but first grade orientation begins at 6:30 p.m. and second grade at 7 p.m. on Aug. 29. Then on Aug. 31,parents of third grade students will have orientation at 6:30 p.m. and fourth grade at 7 p.m. All elementary parent orientation will be held at the child's assigned campus. Douglas Intermediate's parent orientation will be on Aug. 22 at 7 p.m. Meet the Teacher will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at middle school and Houston Learning Center on Aug. 28, and at high school Sept. 5.
The consent agenda up for board approval includes authorizing the superintendent to sign all Head Start documents and paying the bills.
Action items include approval of local policies as recommended by Texas Association of School Boards based Policy Mandate Update 78, which was discussed and presented to the board in a special July 31 meeting; renewing a compact with Upper East Texas Tech-Prep/School-to-Work Partnership; a bid for general classroom materials/office supplies for Sept. 1, 2006 through Aug. 31, 2007; a bid for employer-sponsored life insurance; and setting the proposed tax rate along with a date for a public hearing on the proposed rate.
An executive session will follow action items should there be any personnel or real property items up for board discussion or consideration. The board will reconvene for action on any of those matters discussed during the closed session then continue the board session with a budget workshop.
The board meeting begins at 6 p.m. tonight in the board room of SSISD Administration Building, which is located at 631 Connally St.
