2007 Relay For Life gets early start with rally next Saturday
From Staff Reports

August 4, 2006 - Hopkins County Relay For Life 2007 will be holding a Relay Rally from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, at Evening Chapel CME Church, located at 199 Putman St.

As an incentive to get more teams involved and signed up early, the Relay committee will offer a special $5 registration fee for any team signing up to participate in the 2007 event to raise funds for the American Cancer Society.

Any team registering after Aug. 12 will be required to pay the $30 registration fee.

In 2006, 291 cancer survivors registered for the relay, with more than 200 walking the track during the event. There were also 50 registered care-givers and 37 teams participating this year.

Despite the fact that event organizers were forced to shut the 2006 Relay down early due to storms, this year's Relay raised more than $124,535. The teams raised $76,000 for ACS, while corporate underwriters and sponsors chipped in almost $43,000, and another $5,279 was raised from luminaria sales.

The goal of the Relay each year is not only to remember those who have died as a result of cancer, but to celebrate those who are battling or have successfully beaten cancer. Just as important, the Relay raises as much money as possible for ACS for cancer research and local programs benefiting cancer patients and their families.

Anyone interested in participating in next year's relay, or forming a team to walk the event, is encouraged to attend the Relay Rally 2007 next Saturday at Evening Chapel CME.
