Traffic being moved as Hillcrest Drive construction continues

Aug. 3, 2006 -- Motorists on Hillcrest Drive -- the section of State Highway 19 between Interstate 30 and Airport Road -- are in for a new experience, starting today.

For many months, traffic has been detoured from the normal traffic lanes to give contractors room to completely rebuild the western half of the road. With that segment mostly completed, traffic was being rerouted to the newly constructed roadway on Thursday to allow work crews to move to the other side of the highway.

The overall project, which was expected to require 18 months to complete, is upgrading the busy thoroughfare to handle current traffic volume, as well as future traffic. When complete, Hillcrest Drive will have a center left turn lane and paved shoulders.

Intersections at Main Street and SH 19 and Houston Street and SH 19 are also being redesigned and rebuilt and will incorporate new signal systems.

The work upgrading Hillcrest is only one part of more than $15 million in highway improvement projects nearing completion, underway or in planning stages for Hopkins County this year.
