April 27, 2006 -- North Hopkins High School came away from the Regional Academic University Interscholastic League Meet with a third place overall ranking, earning 128 cumulative team points.
Thirteen students were recognized for their first through sixth place individual finishes, and four teams were recognized for finishing either first or second. In five categories, NHHS also had two students place in the top six.
Sabra Thomas and Katy Williams each placed in editorial writing and literary criticism. Thomas took first in editorial and fifth in literary criticism, while Williams took fifth in editorial and sixth in literary criticism. The team’s scores were high enough to help the literary criticism team, which also included Megan Lehr, earn a second-place ranking. Thomas was also recognized for her second-place finish in number sense.
Cayla Newkirk was also lauded for placing in two events. Newkirk earned second in news writing and sixth in prose. Megan Baxter also was noted for placing fourth in news writing, and Ali Santana placed fourth in feature writing. Their scores also contributed to the journalism teams’ first place ranking at the regional meet held April 21-22 at Stephen F. Austin University in Nacogdoches.
The calculator applications team consisting of Art Ugalde, Kara Mannis, Jake Cockrum and Ashley Hooten earned a second place team ranking, as did the speech team. Ugalde placed fifth and Mannis sixth individually in calculator applications, and Cory Johnson was recognized for a sixth place finish in persuasive speaking.
Students earning first through third place honors will advance to the state meet as will the top-ranked teams at the regional meet.
