April 16, 2006 - Billy Liggett, a former sports writer and editor at newspapers in Sulphur Springs, Pearland and Friendswood, was named Wednesday as managing editor of the Opelousas (Louisiana) Daily World newspaper.
Liggett, 29, has served as city editor for the paper since May 2004.
“Billy is one of the top young newsroom executives in the state,” said Daily World general manager Chad Fontenot. “He brings a passion for the craft and commitment of excellence to our news coverage.”
Liggett began his journalism career in 2000 when he joined the Greenville Herald Banner as a reporter covering the police beat. In 2001, he joined the News-Telegram as a sports writer, winning a Texas Associated Press Managing Editor's Award for sports feature writing.
Before joining the Opelousas Daily World staff, he was editor of the Pearland and Friendswood Reporter News, two weekly newspapers located south of Houston. In his year at the Reporter News, the paper took home seven Texas Press Association Awards for its news and feature coverage.
Liggett, formerly a resident of Como and Dike, is a 1994 graduate of Como-Pickton High School.
