April 3, 2006 - Police engaged in a vehicle pursuit and a foot chase over the weekend, resulting in one arrest and with one person successfully eluding police.

Sgt. Norman Sanders engaged in a brief car and foot chase which concluded at a College Street residence, where the officer was unable to identify the suspect Saturday night.

Sanders attempted to stop a brown truck for speeding on Oak Avenue Saturday night. As the officer pulled onto Oak Avenue to stop it, the truck sped up. The pursuit continued down College Street and onto J.P. Alley, where the truck struck a power pole before driving into back yard of a College Street residence and the driver ran into the house. When it became apparent Sanders couldn’t positively identify the suspect from among several people at the house, the officer had the truck towed and left.

Then at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday, officer Mark Estes stopped Chudney Haran Beard, 27, for riding his bicycle in the middle of Jarbo Street. Beard was “extremely nervous,” smelled like alcohol and kept trying to reach into his front pocket. A long cigar box with marijuana and three rocks of crack cocaine weighing 1.2 grams were found on him during a pat down.

Officer Lonnie Taylor and Lt. Bo Fox, who arrived to assist, tried to put hand restraints on Beard, but the man took off running through several yards. Estes caught up with him two blocks away, forcing him to the ground. Beard was arrested for manufacture or delivery of a controlled substance.
