Sept. 8, 2005 -- There are currently 105 cooking teams registered for the 35th Annual “World Champion Hopkins County Stew Contest,” which is set for Saturday, Sept. 17, on the grounds of the Hopkins County Chamber of Commerce and Hopkins County Regional Civic Center. There are 52 chicken stew entries, 40 beef stew entries and 13 entries in the Superstew Category, which is made up of past first place winners. Friday, Sept. 9, is the day when those cooking teams may stop by the Chamber office and pick up their quart containers, aprons and check for ingredients. Anyone else who wants to cook in this year’s contest may still register right up until Friday, Sept. 16.

Prize sponsors for this year's stew contest include: Best Western Trail Dust Inn, which is sponsoring the first place beef stew prize of $300; Grocery Supply Company, which is sponsoring the first place chicken stew prize of $300; the $500 Super Stew prize is provided by A.K.Gillis, Sulphur Springs Coca-Cola and APAC Texas. Ocean Spray Cranberries is the sponsor of the $250 Super Campsite /Costume prize, and Advantage Copy Systems and Area Wide Directory are the sponsors of the $250 Campsite/and Costume Prize. Custom Shutters is the sponsor of the $150 2nd place beef stew prize and Feeders Supply, Brookshire’s and Price Mitsubishi are the sponsors of the 2nd Place chicken stew prize. Sponsoring the third place beef stew prize is Dairyland Automation, and sponsoring the 3rd Place Chicken Stew Prize is Bob Weaver’s Town & Country Cleaners. We appreciate these businesses for their participation as prize sponsors for this year’s event.

Other sponsors for this year’s stew contest include Sulphur Springs Ford, Lincoln, Mercury, Mazda for the stew aprons; Community Bank, which sponsored our stew tickets; City National Bank, Alliance Bank and State Representativa Mark Homer, who sponsored that good old Hopkins County cheese; Furr’s Cafeteria and Chili’s for the crackers; Price Mitsubishi for the bowls; and Chicken Express and Piggly Wiggly for the paper goods. Our thanks to all the above for their support of this annual event.

Tickets for the 2nd Annual “Great American Duck Race are now on sale at the following locations: Sulphur Springs Municipal Building, Alliance Bank, City National Bank, Guaranty Bond Bank, Community Bank, Plain & Fancy Sandwich Shoppe, Bobby Mcdonald Bookeeping, Century 21 First Group, Town & Country Cleaners, and the Chamber of Commerce. Tickets are $5 each. Prizes for the Duck Race include a $500 first place prize sponsored by Thomas Clark, Independent AFLAC Agent from Colleyville, Texas the $50 “Lame Duck” Prize for the last place finisher, sponsored by AFLAC agent Lee Ann Oliver of Greenville; and a $250 second place and $100 third place prize. Duck Race tickets may also be purchased the day of the stew contest at the Chamber of Commerce.
