Making Hay: Despite drought, Ag Workers Hay Show draws strong entries

Oct. 13, 2005 - The Hopkins County Professional Ag Workers Association’s annual Hay Show is in the history books. There were 17 entries, with the top 10 bales being sold at auction by auctioneer Don Sapaugh. The top thre bales received cash prizes of $100 for 1st place, $50 for second place and $25 for third place.

R.L. Wright submitted the Grand Champion bale with a second cutting of Coastal testing at 18.5 percent protein. This bale was bought by Alliance Bank.

´┐ŻWright was also the runner-up. He submitted the Reserve Champion bale, which was a second cutting of Tifton 85 testing at 15.1 percent protein. City National Bank bought this bale.

Jim Russell, with Tifton 85 testing at 13.3 percent protein, submitted the third place bale. State Representative Mark Homer bought this bale. There was also an add-on to this bale by Farm Country.

Chasen Folmar submitted the fourth place bale with a second cutting of Coastal testing at 14.5 percent protein. Guaranty Bond Bank bought this bale.

The fifth place bale was submitted by Robert Russell with Tifton 85 testing at 13.1 percent. Dairyland Automation bought this bale.

Wesley Fouse submitted the sixth place bale, a second cutting of Coastal testing at 12.3 percent protein. This bale was bought by Northeast Texas Farmers Co-Op.

The seventh place bale was submitted by Marilyn Smith with a 1st cutting of Coastal testing at 15 percent protein. This bale was bought by Alliance Bank.

The eighth place bale was submitted by Koyt Koon with a second cutting of Tifton 85 testing at 11.8 percent protein. This bale was bought by Guaranty Bond Bank.

The ninth place bale was submitted by Chris Kultgen with a third cutting of Coastal testing at 13.7 percent protein. Community Bank bought this bale.

Jimmy Winfrey submitted the tenth place bale with a first cutting of Coastal testing at 15.1 percent. Hopkins County Farm Bureau and Northeast Texas Farmers Co-Op bought this bale.
