After school academic rally slated Oct. 20 at Boys & Girls Club

Oct. 15, 2005 -- Boys & Girls Club of Sulphur Springs will utilize a $1,000 grant from JC Penney Afterschool Fund to help local youth become more successful in school.

The local club will join more than 200 other clubs across the country  by hold an "I Can Achieve" Academic Pledge Rally and through support of after-school programs by participating in "Lights On!" Afterschool event.

The rally will be held from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, at  the Boys & Girls Club at 201 East Houston St., Douglas Intermediate School at 600 Calvert St., and at the Cumby branch of the club at Cumby school, to encourage youth age six to 15 to make a pledge to improve their academic performance for the upcoming school year. Community members are encouraged to show their support of the program by attending the Lights On! Afterschool rally. Refreshments will be served and games slated.

Each youngster participating in the program will be asked to recite the "I Can Achieve" academic pledge, promising to commit to a list of behaviors that will enhance their performance in school, and sign a pledge card that will later be displayed at the Sulphur Springs club.

Boys and Girls Club workers will also join the children's parents or guardians in signing the child's pledge card, demonstrating their commitment to support the club member in reaching his or her goals.

Youth will also set goals utilizing the Goals for Graduation five-step process which teaches them how to achieve their goals and the impact that can have on their futures.
