Nov. 20, 2005 -- With the days ending sooner and cooler weather finally setting in, many residents can be found either bundled in jackets while rushing to meetings and evening activities or snuggled beneath warm throws and flannel night gear in front of the TV to enjoy a restful night in.
But not everyone is so lucky.
For some, warm blankets and coats are a luxury they cannot afford. Thus, the impetus behind Hopkins County Community Action Network's annual winter coat and blanket drive to provide county residents with much-needed warmth to help make the cooler months bearable.
In the past, the drive has provided enough warm gear to outfit hundreds of individuals and families in need. The annual drive is being conducted throughout the month of November, just in time for the cool December winds and weather.
Anyone with lightly used jackets and blankets still in good repair can bring the laundered or dry cleaned ready-to-wear coats and blankets to the CANHelp building, located at 525 Church St.
The CANHelp office will accept donations Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m., and on Fridays from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. through Dec. 1. If those times are not convenient, potential coat and blanket donors can call 903-885-9797 to schedule another time when staff is available to receive the donation.
Anyone in need of a coat may visit the CANHelp office during the drop off times. It should be noted, however, that each person requesting a coat must be present to receive a jacket. For more information about the drive, call 903-885-9797.
